Health and Fun with Ben Wa Balls

Ben Wa balls, also referred to as Ben Wah Balls Burmese balls, Venus balls or Geisha balls, are small marble-sized balls that can be used to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles and tighten the vagina. They are sometimes connected by a string or a silicone coating.

They’ve been around for hundreds of years but have recently seen a surge in popularity after being featured in the Fifty Shades of Grey novels.

The Ultimate Guide to Ben Wa Balls was created to answer the questions people often have after hearing about them for the first time. If you have a question that’s not covered in one of our main sections you can check out our FAQ, and if it’s not covered there leave us a comment or get in touch with us here.

Stainless Steel Ben Wa BallsCommon uses for Ben Wa balls include sexual stimulation and improving bladder control. Gynecologists and Obstetricians recommend them along with Kegel exercises and vaginal weights to improve elasticity of the vagina an increase bladder control.

Increasing weights can be used to strengthen the vagina and improve sexual performance and experiences.

Bladder control issues, like that which occurs during coughing or sneezing and becomes more common as women grow older, or after childbirth, can be helped with the use of Ben Wa balls or Kegel exercises.

How to Use Ben Wa Balls

Before inserting the balls into the vagina use the restroom and empty your bladder.

  1. Use lubrication on the balls to help them glide in
  2. Lay down if you haven’t done this before, then insert the ball (or balls)
  3. Hold the balls inside you by tensing your leg muscles together and your PC muscles, start out with 15 minutes then try to go longer.
  4. Remove the balls by standing up, coughing, or if you’re still having trouble you can sit and bear down as if you were having a bowel movement.

They also make Ben Wa balls with a retrieval cord if you’re worried about removing them, you just pull the cord and out they come.

For Sexual Stimulation…

Ben Wa balls have been around for hundreds of years and were commonly used by women who after inserting them would rock back and forth in their rocking chair, rolling the balls around and bringing themselves to orgasm after a while. Women these days have been a bit more daring with them, secretly wearing them while riding the bus, taking a walk, or even while at work.

Vibrating Ben Wa Balls

There are Ben Wa balls that put a focus on vaginal health and kegel exercises, and then there are others that are all about pleasure.

Lelo Lyla 2 Bullet vibrator with Remote ControlFor the most part we recommend staying away from vibrating ben wa balls as most of the products in the marketplace don’t stand the test of time. If you’re looking for something similar we would recommend the Remote-Controlled Bullet Vibrator sold by Lelo. It’s offered with a One-Year Warranty so you know they stand behind their quality.

You probably wouldn’t use something like this for kegel exercises or other typical health uses, but if you’re looking for a fun addition to your bedroom routine these will serve quite well.

For Kegel Exercises…

Because the Ben Wa balls are weighted and must be held in they are great for strengthening the pelvic floor muscles. Kegel Balls are available with elastic silicone covering that you can squeeze on, or you can tug on the string or retrieval cord to increase difficulty. Doing Kegel exercises daily will tighten and strengthen the vagina muscles which can lead to many benefits including improved sexual experiences as well as improved bladder control due to the strengthening of the pelvic muscles.

  1. I just started using the ben wa balls due to having a baby. My vaginal muscles are not as strong as they used to be. How long should it take before I see a change and can I wear them all day?

    • Doctor Love says:

Hello, I can answer your question (I have been helping people with their sex lives for over 10 years).

Depending on which type you have decided to purchase, you most definitely can wear them all day.
The reason why I say it depends, is some kegel balls are a bit cheaper quality and have a string between them that isnt covered. If you purchased a pair with a porous string attaching the balls, they cannot be cleaned properly and even some of these types can be around $30. It is important to tell the person you are buying from your intentions so they can help you purchase the best type to acheive the results you are looking for.
If you did happen to purchase the balls with a porous string attaching them, I highly advise you to discard them and get a new non porous pair (silicone, glass, metal etc) as you cannot clean porous string properly and can easily get infections (after sex your vagina is covered in microscopic tears).

If you did purchase a high quality pair with either no string or a silicone covered string – congrats! You can wear them as long as you like, cleaning them well in between uses using either a toy cleaner or mild anti bacterial hand soap and warm water. Rinse thoroughly. Always clean immediately after use and again before usage.

The time it takes to see results will vary greatly depending on how often you wear them for and how long each time. I recommend wearing them for the day (as long as you like – I usually wear them about 4 hours or more every 2nd day). Results will not happen immediately, depending on your muscle degredation it can take quite a few weeks.

Another thing to consider as well:
Kegel balls come in different sizes. If you have never used them before and accidentally purchased the small, heavy ones – depending on your muscle strength and especially after child birth, you may not be physically able to keep even just one in. If this is the case and you cannot afford a larger tethered pair (typically you would start with a larger tethered pair as they are easier to hold in, the small separate heavy ones are the type to work up to – much more advanced) you can start by inserting one, and just keeping it in while sitting if it falls out when standing and then work your way up to standing and I suggest no matter what type you have purchased, do not leave the house with them in unless you know that if you were to sneeze, cough etc they wont fall out :)

Either way, dont give up! It takes a bit of work but the results are wonderful.
They will get you back to as close as you were before as physically possible (possibly even better if you keep at it!), stronger orgasms, completely lose that sneeze and pee thing (and prevent this common issue that comes with older age).

What irks me, is that doctors often dont tell pregnant patients how important these are to use DURING pregnancy as well. It makes for a much easier birth and prevents tearing. They say to do your kegels – but for a couple of minutes when you remember once in awhile does nothing….. when you have the balls in you are automatically holding them in without even doing anything – for the entire time they are in! Now that is what makes a difference.

So dont give up, it takes awhile but SO worth it! Enjoy your new, improved vagina once it gets stronger – you and your partner will love it!!

  2. Hi! I have been diagnosed with mild prolapse. The doctor told me to do excecise: running, jumping and abdominals (not the common ones, another, I don’t remember the name now) and kegel excercises. Can I use these balls? Would they help me?

    Thank you so much!

    • If you have a prolapse, even a mild one, I would talk it over with your Doctor before trying ben wa balls or any either type of kegel aids. I’ve seen answers to this question all over the map so I wouldn’t feel right telling you one way or another. If your Doctor doesn’t think it’s a good idea right now don’t sweat it, regular kegel exercises are still great and if you stick with them and consistently work at it you’ll see results. Best of luck!
