The Ultimate Beginner’s Guide to Ben Wa Balls

Lelo Luna Beads Noir

Welcome to our new Beginner’s Guide to Ben Wa Balls, we’ve put this guide together to help get you started. We have several in-depth articles on the site that go into more details on each topic we cover below but this guide pulls it all together in one place.

Ben Wa Balls are small balls that are inserted into the vagina to assist with kegel exercises and for sexual pleasure. They are often hollow with additional smaller balls inside that will move around as you move causing subtle vibrations. Some ben wa balls are stringless but the most popular choices these days are mostly ben wa balls attached by a string like the ones shown to the left.

This guide will cover  how to use them, and answer many common questions beginner’s have. We’ll also help you choose which kinds of Ben Wa Balls are the best fit for your situation.

But first, let’s get a few things straight…

If you read a lot of online reviews for Ben Wa Balls you’ll notice that they seem to be all over the place, you might see several 4-5 Star reviews and several 1 star reviews, how can this be?

It’s not uncommon to see a few 1 star reviews of a good product for a variety of reasons (shipping, bad customer service with seller, etc.) but it seems to be more widespread with this product regardless of the particular brand or model, why is that?

It all comes down to expectations of course.  They feel good, usually really good, but if you’re looking for something to bring you to the point of orgasm within a few minutes you might end up being one of those 1 star reviewers. It doesn’t have to be that way though, if your goal is something of the more immediate nature there are still good options for you, it’s just best to know which ones will satisfy your expectations from the start. Stick around to the end to learn which types of ben wa balls you should consider…

On the other hand, if you’re looking for something that could improve your sex life for the rest of your life, you’re on the right track.

On to the benefits…

Kegel exercises have been shown to be very effective at strengthening the pelvic floor and vaginal muscles. What does this mean? You’ll be tighter and stronger which, aside from the obvious sexual benefits, can also help prevent or repair a myriad of issues that women commonly have after pregnancy.

Already given birth? Don’t worry, it’s not too late for you to gain these benefits too. If you get started before or during pregnancy it can help give you a head start and provide some benefits during labor itself but serious medical issues aside, it’s never too late to get started. The body is changed by pregnancy and labor but it has an amazing ability to recover over time, you can help it and ultimately come back stronger and toner with the addition of kegel exercises to your healthy lifestyle.

Let’s get down to business…

Using Ben Wa Balls is quite simple,  you can follow these steps to get started:

  1. Find a quiet place where you won’t be disturbed and get comfortable
  2. Use lubrication to help the balls glide in
  3. Lay down and slowly insert the balls
  4. Hold the balls inside of you by tensing your leg muscles and / or doing kegel exercises

If you’re feeling adventurous you might have thoughts of wearing them while going about your daily business. If that sounds exciting to you then go for it, but I’d definitely recommend you get very used to them before you consider trying something like that. It might not be as easy to keep them in for longer periods of time as you think so build up to it slowly to avoid an embarrassing… incident.

Some women worry that they might get stuck inside the vagina, especially when they see pictures of the stainless steel ben wa balls that aren’t attached by a string. Don’t worry though, there’s no place for them to go. Sometimes it may take a little more effort than others to remove them but they’ll come out. That said, let’s be clear that this only applies to the vagina. If you feel compelled to use them or their smaller cousins… elsewhere… you’ll need to be more careful.

You can also use them during sex to add some additional stimulation for both you and your partner.

Choosing the best fit…

There are many different types of ben wa balls available and they’re each better suited for different goals and experience levels.

Adjustable Kegel Weights

Kegel balls with adjustable weights allow you to start with a lower weight and build up to higher weights over time without having to make several purchases. Even if you’re strong enough to use the heaviest weight configuration you may appreciate the option of using the lower weights in different situations.

The Lelo Luna Beads below are among the most popular ben wa balls on the market. They are duotone balls which means they are hollow with smaller balls inside of them that move as you move. The ones shown below come with two 28 gram and two 37 gram beads (balls). Lelo also offers the Lelo Luna Beads Mini which are smaller and size. They suggest going with the standard Luna Beads if you have experienced childbirth and the Luna Beads Mini version if you’re under thirty and have not been through childbirth.

Stainless Steel Ben Wa Balls

A good set of Stainless Steel Ben Wa Balls (surgical grade) have many advantages but may be ill-suited for beginners. They can be more challenging to grip and keep in and too heavy for those who haven’t been doing kegel exercises regularly for a while. On the plus side they are very durable, easy to clean, and once you’re past the beginner stage they can offer the next level of challenge.

The 4 piece set below comes with multiple sizes and unlike the Luna Beads above is not attached by a cord or string in any way. Some people prefer the convenience of the string and attachment when inserting and removing their ben wa balls while others prefer the stringless variety because they can be easier to clean before and after usage.

Vibrating Ben Wa Balls

If you’re looking for something that packs more of a punch you could consider vibrating ben wa balls. These often provide several different vibration levels and rhythms. An alternative that has better options to choose from is a vibrating egg or a wireless bullet vibrator. These are similar to ben wa balls but are typically a single device that is more of an elongated egg or bullet shape. These are more common than vibrating ben wa balls which tend to be over priced and of disappointing quality.

No matter what variety you choose though watch out for overpriced novelty items. Traditional ben wa balls are mechanically simple in nature, but when you add in the vibrator and the wireless controller than many of these devices rely on it can be very easy to end up spending a good deal of money on a device that doesn’t last more than a few uses.

The remote-controlled bullet vibrator from Lelo shown below is a bit on the pricey side but it’s well-made and comes with a 1-Year Warranty, something you don’t see often in this market.

  1. Hello! i recently purchased some small metal ben wa balls. I’ve been practicing kegel exercises for years and am a huge proponent of kegels for everyone…the thing is that i bought the balls and started using them, putting them in and going out for several hours at a time. I often forget they are in and it seems to take little to no effort to hold them in. i walk around, go up stairs, ride the bus, etc, but i don’t find them difficult to hold in at all…what are some other exercises i can do with them to make it a bit more challenging? or should i look for a smaller or heavier pair? thanks!

    • I had the same situation so I believe that I’ve “outgrown” them so I’ve recently ordered smaller balls in hopes that might help. Did you ever figure it out?

  2. Hi, I am 47 years old, I am diabetic since 7-8 years. I don’t have much interest in having sex since long time. Can I use these Kegel balls? Is it safe for the diabetic person? Blood sugar is well controlled..
    Please let me know.
